Master the Art and Science of Diamond Grading

This in-depth class is designed to help students develop the essential techniques and professional judgment needed to confidently grade and evaluate diamonds with accuracy and consistency. Over the span of twenty contact hours, participants will explore both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of diamond assessment.

Approximately half of the course is devoted to hands-on lab sessions, giving students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in lectures and readings through guided practice and personalized instruction.

During these lab sessions, students work directly with a variety of diamond simulants and treated stones, including laser-drilled and fracture-filled examples. Through close observation and comparison, participants learn to recognize the subtle yet critical characteristics that distinguish natural diamonds from those that are treated or synthetic. Emphasis is placed on identifying the telltale indicators of different treatments and understanding how they affect a diamond’s beauty, durability, and value.

The course also delves into the economic aspects of diamond trading. Students engage in thoughtful discussions about value assessment, pricing strategies, and cost-benefit analysis, gaining insight into how various factors influence market value within the global jewelry industry.

In addition, the curriculum introduces students to the regulatory standards and best practices that guide ethical trade and consumer transparency. Key FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation) guidelines are covered to ensure students understand the legal definitions, disclosure requirements, and international protocols that protect both professionals and consumers in the marketplace.

By the end of the course, participants will not only have strengthened their technical grading abilities but also gained a deeper appreciation of the complex interplay between craftsmanship, science, and commerce that defines today’s diamond industry.
